Joo Luiz and Douglas Lora, as The Brasil Guitar Duo, excel at "combining an energetic and subtle touch with contemporary swing," said Folha de So Paulo, a publication from their native land. And the preeminent-in-its field Classical Guitar magazine claims, "The maturity of musicianship and technical virtuosity... is simply outstanding."
The approval of the press may be important to performing artists, but even more so is the applause of the audience. The Brasil Guitar Duo's innovative programming features a seamless blend of traditionally presented classical guitar works along with lively Brazilian works, to the delight audiences around the world.
Now, aficionados of classical guitar on Maui will get a chance to share that delight, when the Brasil Guitar Duo will bring an engaging program to the McCoy Studio Theater at Maui Arts & Cultural Center (The MACC) on Friday, March 7, at 7:30 p.m.

Equally at home with both the classical and world music platform, the Brasil Guitar Duo actively strives to expand the repertoire for two guitars, with Lora contributing works of his own and Luiz arranging both classical and Brazilian music. For this Maui concert, the duo will present works by Astor Piazzolla, Jean Philip Rameau, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Egberto Gismonti and Marco Pereira as well as original works by both members of the duo.
Luiz and Lora met in So Paulo as teenage guitar students, and have been performing together for more than 15 years. The duo's primary studies were with Henrique Pinto, along with Fabio Zanon, Paulo Martelli, Sergio Abreu, and Alice Artz. They now tour globally, bringing a broad repertoire of classical guitar works by composers as Bach, Sor, Scarlatti and Debussy among others, combined with the traditional music of their native land, including the choro, samba, maxixe and baio.
Brasil Guitar Duo also has a growing catalogue of critically acclaimed recordings. Their first CD was "Bom Partido" in 2007, featuring an all-Brazilian repertoire, followed by two acclaimed CDs covering the complete works for two guitars by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. The duo has won major praise for its latest CD--a collaboration with flutist Marina Piccinini that features all of J.S. Bach's sonatas for flute and harpsichord, arranged by the duo.
Tickets for Brasil Guitar Duo are $35, available at The MACC Box Office Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call 242-SHOW (7469) to charge by phone or purchase tickets online 24 hours a day at www.mauiarts.org.
