No-kill philosophy should be top priority at MHS

March 13, 2014
Maui Weekly

In hiring the new director of the Maui Humane Society, the top priority should be that this person believes Maui can and must embrace the "No-Kill" philosophy. Further, Maui should become a no-kill facility within one year, as a condition for continued employment.

I lived on Maui for over 20 years, moving to Austin, Texas, in 2009. I was amazed to find that Austin is a no-kill city, saving over 90 percent of its pets. No-kill is also a reality in Reno, Los Angeles and many other forward-thinking locations. If these places can do it, so can Maui. Compassionate care for animals does not include killing them.
