The Irish band Dan comes all the way from County Waterford in Ireland to the Castle Theater stage on Thursday, March 20, at 7:30 p.m. to help us celebrate St. Patrick's month. Expect "a spirit-raising concoction," according to The Irish Times (and who would know better?)
Dan, named after the Celtic moon goddess, is one of the leading traditional Irish ensembles of today, featuring virtuosic players on flute, tin whistle, fiddle, button accordion, bouzouki, and vocals in both Irish and English.
The members of Dan first met up at a music festival in County Waterford in late 1994. Benny McCarthy, Donal Clancy, Donnchadh Gough and Daire Bracken played at the renowned Festival Interceltique de Lorient in France--to immediate success. Two brothers from Dublin, Tom and Eamonn Doorley, joined the group in 1996.
Danú comes all the way from Ireland to the Castle Theater stage to help Maui celebrate St. Patrick.
The band's high-energy performance quickly became much sought after on the music festival circuit, and in 1997, the band released their debut album to coincide with a debut tour in the U.S. Their second album, "Think Before You Think" (2000) was voted Best Overall Traditional Act by Irish Music magazine in Dublin. Their other four releases have enjoyed similar critical and popular acclaim.
The first female member of the band, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh from County Kerry, joined up with the fourth CD.
Dan is the only band to have been voted Best Traditional Group twice in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
"A vibrant mix of virtuosity, energy and empathy."--The Washington Post
