Maui Supports Homeless Census Project

March 20, 2014
Maui Weekly

On behalf of the Maui Homeless Alliance, the Ho'omoana Foundation was able to raise $1,200 to purchase coupons from local restaurants for homeless individuals who filled out annual census forms for the unsheltered.

Greg Chou of Wailuku, Jennifer Brittin of Makawao, David Spees of Pa'ia, Maile Ford of Makawao and Down to Earth in Kahului were the nonprofit's leading contributors.

Despite difficult conditions, members of the Maui Homeless Alliance were able to get out into locations to present short surveys asking where homeless individuals slept on a certain date earlier this year.

Maui Homeless Alliance outreach workers and volunteers provided $3 to $5 coupons in appreciation for their participation.

"Smiles rolled across participants faces that were hug-worthy," said Lisa Darcy of the Ho'omo-ana Foundation.

The Maui Homeless Alliance meets every third Wednesday of the month at noon in the MEO building behind the Cameron Center in the back conference room.
