In a front-page article in The Maui News entitled, "Monsanto submits report for 'transparency,'" (Friday, March 14) Monsanto listed atrazine as one of the herbicides it uses here on Maui and Molokai. A recent article in the New Yorker magazine, Feb. 10, entitled, "A Valuable Reputation," discusses studies done about atrazine. One finding states that "mothers living close to water sources containing atrazine were more likely to have babies who were underweight or had a defect in which the intestines and other organs protrude from the body." This type of birth defect is now occurring on Molokai. Despite the fact that Monsanto's use of this herbicide is within legal limits, it does not mean that it is safe to use. "Enuff" already.
