Jai Uttal Returns to Maui

April 3, 2014
Maui Weekly

A pioneer of the World Music community, longtime, best-selling, Grammy-nominated recording artist Jai Uttal will return to Maui in support of his CD release, "Return to Shiva Station - Kailash Connection," for a live, in-concert kirtan at Makawao Union Church, on Sunday, April 13, beginning at 7 p.m.

Jai Uttal, with his eclectic East-meets-West sound, is a "cred music composer, recording artist, multi-instrumentalist and ecstatic vocalist, who combines influences from India with American rock and jazz to create a stimulating and exotic multicultural fusion that is truly world spirit music."

Described as "very hypnotic," Uttal's music is very popular in the yoga community.

Jai Uttal will return to Maui for a live, in-concert kirtan at Makawao Union Church, on Sunday, April 13, beginning at 7 p.m.

"He does a great job of explaining the purpose of chanting and kirtan," a reviewer stated. "The practice of calling to the divine creates a bridge between the individual and the eternal, opening the heart and welcoming the spirit."

With "Return to Shiva Station - Kailash Connection," Uttal re-envisions his groundbreaking "Shiva Station," originally released in 1997. This wholly new collection brings us closer to the music itself, with unadorned, intimate arrangements that illuminate directly the spiritual heart of each composition. Jai reveals new dimensions of their original inner essence--the seed of Bhakti (devotion) that gave birth to each of them.

Tickets are $20 (cash only) in advance, available at Maui Kombucha in Ha'iku and the Monsoon India restaurant in Kihei. Tickets will be $30 (cash only) at the door.

Monsoon India will host an Indian dinner buffet beginning at 5:30 p.m. for $15 (cash only), which will include dinner entrees and desserts.

The Indian dinner menu includes Saag Aloo (with Molokai sweet potatoes); Mutter Paneer (with fresh carrot slices); organic, free-range Chicken Korma; Tempeh Tikka Masala; Dahl with fresh cilantro garnish; basmati rice, naan, raita and chutneys.

Attendees may bring their own beverages or purchase chai, water or kombucha.

Makawao Union Church is located at 1445 Baldwin Ave. above Pa'ia.
