Sheldon Simeon, the executive chef of Migrant at Mala Wailea in the Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, has won "Best New Chef" honors in the Northwest and Pacific Region of the U.S. in Food & Wine magazine's 2014 People's Choice Awards.
A Food & Wine press release said Simeon was picked from a field of 100 nominees from 10 different regions in the U.S. His competitors included Chris Kajioka of the Vintage Cave on O'ahu, Kevin Lee of Prime in Kailua and Greg Denton of Ox in Portland, Oregon, who formerly worked at Mala Ocean Tavern in Lahaina.
"It's so awesome to win this award, and it's awesome to have it under Migrant," Simeon said.
Migrant at Mala Wailea’s Chef Sheldon Simeon has won “Best New Chef” honors in the Northwest and Pacific Region of the U.S. in Food & Wine magazine’s 2014 People’s Choice Awards.
He was also the "People's Choice" finalist in last season's "Top Chef" on the Bravo Channel, when he led the culinary team at Star Noodle in Lahaina.
"It's a change of times, and I'm so pleased to be honored again," said Simeon. "This one's for my kitchen team, for the island and for the state of Hawai'i. None of this could have been done without the support of many people. I thank everyone on Maui for their continued support."
Food & Wine said Simeon was selected "because he's meshing his Hawaiian background with local produce and Asian techniques at this no-frills Filipino gastropub."
