Proposed tax increases are out of line

May 1, 2014
Rick Medina - Wailuku , Maui Weekly

Hawai'i has long been known as the state with the highest cost of living in America, but with the highest quality of life because of our moderate climate and friendly residents.

It is easy to see this administration is top-heavy, as it always proposes higher taxes

and larger budgets, making Mayor Alan Arakawa the biggest spender in the history

of Maui County. (Republicans usually accuse Democrats of being tax-and-spenders, but Arakawa is a Republican.)

An 11.3 percent increase in taxes is unaffordable and way out of line.

I am sure County Council members will agree as it receives testimony in the days ahead, but I am also sure they do not need testimony to make expected budget cuts.
