Edventure at the University of Hawai'i Maui College and the Sustainable Living Institute of Maui are offering a four-session training in garden pests and diseases beginning on June 3 and running for four Tuesday mornings from 9 to 11:30 a.m.
Urban Horticulture Extension Agent Lorraine Brooks will instruct participants in Integrated Pest Management (IPM). This process is used on most farms today to identify problems, monitor and determine harmful thresholds, and use diverse management strategies to control pests and diseases.
Brooks will cover identifying common pests, diagnosing plant health and disease, as well as cultural, mechanical, biological and chemical controls to avoid and manage common pests and diseases.
"In my experience coordinating the Master Gardener Program and answering questions at our Help Desk, insects and diseases are the number one concern for both gardeners and farmers," said Brooks. "Learning how to manage these safely and effectively is key to successful growing."
