Located across the street from a beautiful world-class beach in South Kihei, Hawaiian Moons Natural Foods is the first full-service natural health food store in the Kihei-Wailea area. From its beginning in 1994, promoting health food, good fitness and a sustainable lifestyle has been the store's goal.

Current owners Tim and Kristyn Ewing and Phil Reider have made Hawaiian Moons a friendly neighborhood market, providing a one-stop shopping convenience. They offer first-rate nutritional choices with fresh and organic produce, health- and body-care products, great deli food to go and a delicious salad bar, hot food bar and more.

The Ewing's, who met in 1998 while Tim was the general manager of Hawaiian Moons and Kristyn a cashier, immediately fell in love with each other.

Good nutrition begins with healthy choices at Tim and Kristyn Ewing’s high-quality Kīhei health food store.

"The rest is history," said Tim, who married her as soon as he could.

"Eventually, Kristyn's passion for health- and beauty-care led to her creating one of the best selections of well-being and beauty products on Maui," said Tim.

When the previous owners made it known they were looking to sell, the couple knew this was the opportunity for them. On Jan. 1, 2011, they purchased the store.

Reider, one of the store's original business partners, remains in the new partnership. He has continued in his management responsibilities, including his specialty of candy, nutrition bars and exotic chocolates from around the world.

"I love chocolate!" said Reider. "But who doesn't? I put great effort into hand selecting the chocolate we carry from old standards to the artisan, from peanut butter cups and chocolate-covered coconut bars to the exotic chocolate bacon bars, including, of course, a wonderful selection of Hawai'i's finest chocolate."

The owners and staff encourage a sustainable lifestyle through the promotion of organic farming, recycling, environmentally friendly products and energy efficiency.

"I have always felt very strongly about organic foods and feel that all food should be produced or grown this way," said Tim. "Harmful pesticides and artificial ingredients have been poisoning our planet for way too long. Since the GMO debate has surfaced in the last few years, we have been strong supporters of proper labeling of GMO products.

"In addition," he said, "we feel the public has a right to make an informed decision on what they are putting in their bodies and in the Earth's soil."

Their dedication to sustainable living ensures customers the peace of mind that Hawaiian Moons products aim to be environmentally friendly and ecologically responsible.

Kristyn shares this belief from her childhood days.

"I give thanks every day that my mother and father taught me the value of good organic food," she said. "My mom is an amazing cook, and since I was a child, we would prepare meals together with organic vegetables she grew in the garden."

"Mom's philosophy is that 'food is medicine,' and when we support organic and non-GMO practices, we not only support a healthy body, but also a healthy environment."

Supporting local organic farmers is a significant factor for Hawaiian Moons. Farmers who complete a rigorous organic certification are important to them and the community. The store's goal is to provide the highest quality produce in South Maui for sale as well as for use in their famous salad bar, hot meals and to-go food.

"There are so many choices," said Tim. "I'm personally a pasta fanatic, so I love our tuna pasta salad and our Italian summer pasta salad. Some customers marvel over the delicious mix of curried chickpea salad, marinated artichoke salad, local free range eggs and more."

The hot food menu changes daily, so there's always something yummy happening. The teriyaki turkey burgers are really popular, along with the fresh kale green salad. In addition, the turkey sandwiches and the mozzarella salad in the Grab 'n' Go case are favorites.

Health-conscious customers are keen about the selection of frozen items, from organic ice cream to gluten-free items, including pizza. Organic milk, yogurts, cheeses and butter are flown in every week to ensure freshness, as are free-range beef, poultry and Alaskan non-farmed sal-mon.

"Along with focusing on organic and local, we have a wide selection of products for people with food allergies--especially gluten-free products for those with celiac disease," Tim said.

"In fact, we carry items in every department that are gluten-free and make many of our own recipes without gluten, including our very popular turkey meatballs, gluten-free pasta Bolognese and our quinoa salad," said Tim.

Hawaiian Moon's staff members are strong supporters of our local community. They donate to many causes, including volunteer work for Kihei's 4th Friday events and to local community organizations like Grow Some Good, Hale Kau Kau and Kamali'i Elementary School.

"We want to be known as a community-oriented store that offers year-round, healthy and high-quality choices for locals and visitors," said Tim, hoping his customers stay active, fit and hearty.
