Estaire & Sal Godinez

Don’t miss this sweet addition to the Maui Film Festival’s Taste of Chocolate event.

Louise Lambert - Contributing Writer , Maui Weekly

I gravitate to Omar and Rare Vibration performances on Sunday evenings at Kono's On The Green in Kihei, which overlooks South Maui with glorious sunsets and ocean views.

Recently, I attended a special performance there by Estaire Godinez, dynamite Latin singer and percussionist from L.A., performing with her brother, Sal Godinez, and Latitude 21 N. They ignited the room with bassist Marcus Johnson, Indio ('Ulalena's music director) on drums, Larry Fitzpatrick sitting in on bongos and the incredible Joe Cano on guitar.

You can hear Estaire and Sal for yourself this week with Danny M at Maui Film Festival's Taste of Chocolate at the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, on Friday, June 6, at 8 p.m.

Sal came for a three-week gig on Maui with his brother 30 years ago and has been in demand ever since. He has played and recorded with a literal "Who's Who" of the musical artists of Hawai'i, including HAPA, Willie K, Amy Hanaiali'i, Hula Honeys, The Benoits and more.

Sal plays at the Four Seasons lobby lounge on Tuesday nights, entrancing us with versatile jazz piano stylings and his velvety voice along with the great Marcus Johnson. Sal and Marcus have played on Na Hoku Hanohano Award-winning and Grammy-nominated CDs.

Marcus has arranged, produced and played for The Benoits; played and recorded with Amy Hanaiali'i and Willie K; played with Willie Nelson, George Benson, Michael Buble, Tom Scott, Dave Benoit; and performed in a recent Joni Mitchell tribute at Mulligan's On the Blue in Wailea.

Estaire, Latin chantuese, smouldering vocalist, fiery percussionist and musical chameleon extraordinaire, has performed with Prince, Coke Escovedo, George Benson and opened for Peter Tosh and punk band Bow Wow Wow in Europe. With her jazz-pop-Brazilian-Afro-Cuban styles, she plays jazz festivals internationally. She has also done some film scoring and has had acting roles in "The Mission" with Benjamin Bratt and "Private Practice." She is working on a new CD with Leon Ware, composer of "If I Ever Loose This Heaven" and Michael Jackson songs. Estaire, who recently sang with the Mankato Symphony in Minnesota for Cinco de Mayo, is working on a screenplay and an upcoming tour.

Don't miss Estaire and Sal--a sweet addition to the Maui Film Festival's Taste of Chocolate.

Maui's Swing Queen, jazz vocalist and pianist Louise Lambert, and her band perform at Three's Bar & Grill on Friday nights and at Kono's in Kihei on Wednesdays. She teaches voice, piano and "How to Sing and Play in a Band Workshops" for all ages. She also provides world-class musical entertainment for special events.
