A fusion of performing and visual arts, The MACC’s notorious ArT=Mixx series mashes up various art forms and audiences of all ilk.
ArT=Mixx: Bohemian Feminique honors the spirit of women who embrace a non-conventional lifestyle with creativity and passion. The event carries and celebrates the themes of artwork in the current exhibit in Schaefer Gallery. The artists--Rose Adare, Gabrielle Andermann and May Izumi--will all be in attendance, ready to meet their audience, talk about their work, and follow the explorations of the evening. (The exhibit is also free, open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
ArT=Mixx is where artist and audience meet and engage; a fusion of visual art, photography, video art, music, photography, fashion, maker-spaces, dance, performance art and interactive art-making. Featured in this edition of the ArT=Mixx evening are the Maui Roller Girls; Kimberly Dark, writer and performer; Isa Hansen with tribal-fusion belly dancing; artist Melissa Bruck, creating a live-scale on-site painting during the event; "Visual Alchemy" video art by Doug Deboer; deejays Charles Oreve and Gabriel E.L.F; NLE Dollz; and gypsy fortune tellers.
Three's Bar & Grill will have their food truck ready to crank out tasty snacks all evening long and keep the energy levels up. The Maui Cookie Lady will offer cookies and cake to satisfy every sweet tooth and caloric predilection. A full selection of beverages, both hot and cold, will be available.
Note that ArT=Mixx is for adults ages 21 and older only; all attendees must show current, official photo identification to enter the gates.
23rd Annual Ki Ho'alu Festival
Sunday, June 22, 1-7 p.m.
One of Maui's favorite family events returns to The MACC with the 23rd Annual Ki Ho'alu Festival in the A&B Amphitheater. Some of Hawai'i's best slack key guitar players come to perform and provide the Maui audience with a full afternoon of melodious Hawaiian music. This annual festival is always free, and it is a Maui favorite event, enjoyed every year by residents and visitors alike.
The lineup of musicians and recording artists this year includes: Danny Carvalho, HAPA (Barry Flanagan), Stephen Inglis, John Ka'aina, George Kahumoku, Keale, Kaoru Kohnoike, George Ku, LT Smooth, Bobby Moderow, Brother Noland, Jeff Peterson, Glen Smith and Paul Togioka.
Besides and afternoon full of music, the beloved Ki Ho'alu Festival features Hawaiian crafters and displays of made-in-Hawai'i products. 'Ono-licious food from Maui eateries and relaxed seating on the lawn give the event an informal local-style atmosphere, making it easy to linger all afternoon.
The music is performed from the stage of Yokouchi Pavilion, rolling out over the amphitheater. Festival-goers are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs, blankets or mats so they can sit back and enjoy the laid-back music by famed guitar players. This is a family-friendly event--all generations can enjoy the slack key guitar tradition, with both new music and classic favorites.
Both ArT=Mixx and the annual Ki Ho'Alu Festival are presented by The MACC with the support of Maui County.
