The Kihei Community Association (KCA) wants to clarify that we in no way partner with the proclaimed landowners Sarofim Realty Advisors of Dallas Texas or their representatives on Maui, and are distressed at this implication in Maui Weekly's article in June 19-25 edition ("Pi'ilani Promenade Developers Release Update" at www.mauiweekly.com and "Pi'ilani Promenade Developers and Kihei Community Center Release Update" in the hard copy of that edition).
The recent single action we took was to request a statement of the present status of the proposed Pi'ilani Promenade, aka "mega malls," mauka of the Pi'ilani Highway in North Kihei be read, unedited, to our general membership at the Tuesday, June 17, meeting. We thank them for providing this document, which is shown unedited on www.gokihei.org.
Prior to this, our all-volunteer, unfunded organization agreed to meet and discuss with Sarofim and their representatives their plans for this very large land area. Our last "contact" was attending Sarofim's public meeting end of 2013, but as no public testimony was allowed, our last input was submitted on Oct. 14, 2013, in our comments on the Environmental Impact Statement Preparation Notice. (See www.gokihei.org/wp-content/uploads/PiilaniEISP2.pdf.)
We do not observe any significant updates having occurred in 2014, as we peruse this informative article covering the above referenced Nov. 5, 2013, public meeting in the Maui Weekly (mauiweekly.com/page/content.detail/id/511928/Pi-ilani-Promenade-Redux.html).
Thus, we do not see this as an update. It is our understanding that the proposed changes to the project from the original plan, then under the name Eclipse Development of Irvine, Calif., were caused by the state Land Use Commission (LUC) ruling of non-compliance on Feb. 7, 2013.
To verify any input from KCA concerning this proposed project and the process, visit our Website, www.gokihei.org, and use the search feature inputting Pi'ilani Promenade or Sarofim.
