From New Jersey roots, Paul Marchetti's desire to play in a band led to drum lessons with the best, and the realization that to make a living in music, he had to play all styles. Paul is a percussion master of a myriad of styles.
Paul is in demand for gigs and recording sessions, playing rock, pop, reggae, Brazilian, blues, R&B, big band and funk. He played with the Nelson Riddle Big Band, and the Frieburg Jazz Orchestra in Europe, and plays with the Maui Pops Orchestra and with Robert Pollock's Ebb and Flow Arts. Influenced by legendary percussionists Bernard Purdie and Steve Gadd, Emil Richards and Joe Porcaro, his mentors, he has toured worldwide with some of the top names in the music industry. He has played on numerous jingles and soundtracks. When I first met Paul, I sang and he played with the Maui Symphony Jazz Orchestra at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.
Paul toured with Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul and Mary), and with pianist Brian Cuomo and bassist Danny M before they all moved to Maui in the 1980s. He plays shows with multiple artists, including Odetta, Toots and the Maytals, and Paul Butterfield, and concert halls, colleges, radio and TV shows ("The Tonight Show," Merv Griffin, "Midnight Special" and more).
The first album he played on was with Brazilian composer, musician, arranger and producer Eumir Deodato. Paul gigged and/or recorded with Jon Hendricks, keyboardist Lonnie Smith and George Benson, Michael McDonald, Gabe Baltazar, Joe Caro, Charlie Musselwhite, Willie Nelson, Michael Brecker and Rick Vito. Has played on many projects with Walter Becker of Steely Dan. And the list goes on...
Hawaiian artists he accompanied include Willie K., Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom, Howard Ahia, Marty Dread, Henry Allen, and Henry Kapono. New Age artists include Bruce BecVar, Daniel Paul and Donna Delory. He performs and records with local luminaries John Zangrando, Kelly Covington, Fulton Tashombe, Shiro Mori and the Benoits. As the drum tech for Mick Fleetwood, Paul often plays percussion on Fleetwood's shows.
