Maui Waena Intermediate School in Kahului will soon break ground on its long-awaited $5.1 million classroom expansion project. The project entails the addition of eight classrooms, which will add much-needed classroom space for students in the Kahului area.
Plans for the expansion were originally presented in 2007. However, the project has encountered a number of setbacks since then.
The Maui Waena Eight Classroom Expansion Project was officially set to commence on Monday, June 16.
"This is a great accomplishment and testament to the hard work of the community and all those who have worked towards overcoming the obstacles that we have encountered with the project," said Rep. Justin Woodson (Kahului, Pu'unene, Old Sand Hills and Maui Lani).
Earlier this year, Rep. Woodson was successful in bringing together all the key players, including Mayor Alan Arakawa, the county permitting division, the architect, the contractor, Maui Waena Principal Jamie Yap and Department of Education representatives to identify and eliminate obstacles to the start of construction.
