Organizers of TEDxMaui announced their complete lineup of speakers and performers for the third annual TEDx event, which brings together celebrated presenters from Hawai'i and beyond, sharing their big ideas on stage in 18 minutes or less.
This independently organized event, licensed by TED, takes place on Sunday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.
TEDxMaui is intended to educate, inspire and connect great minds by honoring innovators who have passion, curiosity, creativity and adaptability to change the world with revolutionary ideas.
Guests at TEDxMaui 2013
TED, which stands for "technology, entertainment and design," is a national nonprofit organization devoted to "Ideas Worth Spreading." TED holds an annual conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, that has featured speakers such as Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Sir Richard Branson, Steve Jobs, Philippe Starck, Hillary Clinton, Eve Ensler and former United Kingdom Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Presentations from the TED conference are made available for free at TED.com. TED talks have been viewed by millions of people worldwide.
In the spirit of TED, TEDxMaui is a locally produced TED-like event. Presentations from TEDxMaui will be uploaded onto the TEDxMaui Website and on the TEDx YouTube channel. A few presentations may be selected to appear on the TED.com Website. Two of TEDxMaui's previous stage presentations have enjoyed feature placement on TED.com--one from humanitarian photographer Lisa Kristine and one from Maui's own inventor and scientist Dr. Gary Greenberg--reaching a combined 2.1 million views at press time.
The TEDxMaui 2014 team consists of Founder Katie McMillan, Producer and Co-founder Sara Tekula, Speaker Liaison Emma White, Community Liaison Sarah Ruppenthal and Technology Director Peter Liu of Kaiscapes Media. The team encourages students, business owners, entrepreneurs and all curious, open-minded individuals seeking education and inspiration to attend this year's event.
"The mosaic of humanity blows me away," said White, who led the event's curatorial process along with the TEDxMaui team and advisory board. "We have, quite simply, a lineup that exceeds my dreams."
"Anyone with a thirst for knowledge can have a profound experience at TEDxMaui," said Tekula. "I believe in this community's ability to make a difference in the world, and this event is where these changemakers get inspired and subsequently find one another."
