Hawai‘i’s largest ocean shipper, Matson, is increasing its fuel surcharge again, effective Sunday, May 24. The California-based company—owned by Honolulu-based Alexander & Baldwin, Inc.—announced recently it is raising the fuel surcharge 1.5 percentage points from 15 percent to 16.5 percent for its Hawai‘i service, and Guam/Micronesia’s surcharge will rise from 16.5 percent to 18 percent. Company representatives attribute increase to rising fuel-rated costs. This escalation follows six consecutive decreases, in 2008, with the previous one going into effect at the end of last November.
