The Green Building Certification Institute has confirmed that two of Maui’s own have successfully passed the beta-exam for the new and upcoming Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional Homes (LEED AP Homes) exam. Green Building LLC’s founder and owner John Bendon and Project Manager Jean Young are among the first in the state to receive this new and advanced certification. The two may designate themselves as LEED AP Homes. The title provides a standard for professionals participating in design and construction of high-performance green homes the utilize less water, energy and natural resources along with creating less waste, therefore making homes more healthful for those who live there. The LEED Green Building Rating System is operated with the support of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
Maui native Bendon is a Certified Energy Rater and is the vice chair of the USGBC Hawai‘i Chapter and served as a representative for green implementation while building in a number of workshops and conferences. Young, who was raised in Kahului and attended St. Anthony High School, is a Certified Energy Rater as well, and is active with Bendon in the Hawai‘i Chapter Education Committee. She also helped to organize a LEED workshop that was held recently at Maui Community College. For detailed information regarding the LEED rating system and USGBC, visit www.usgbc.org/leed.
