“Looks like all the power is out in Pa‘ia,” radios a patrol officer to 911 Central. To yet another police patrol car he radios, “That’s like the eighth time today!” “Need help?” “No. But I don’t know how far the outage extends, Haleakala and the highway, or what.” Fifteen minutes later lights and power snap back on.

11 a.m., Kahakuloa
Heavy smoke rising in hills above the village turns out to be someone incinerating garbage, say arriving firefighters. No responsible persons seen around there.
11:44 p.m., Moloka‘i
Male hiker with cell phone not injured, but very lost in mountains near Puko‘o. Can’t find the way out, he says. Air One helicopter scrambles from Maui to try help.
2:03 p.m., Spreckelsville
Caller says, “two males beating up a female. Now they’re carrying her away.” Same caller says, “Those same guys were before seen digging a hole.” Three police cars head out, looking for a 2007 blue or gray F-150. They intercept such a vehicle and collar the three males and one female inside it. But occupants blow the whole thing off as a “lovers quarrel” gone extreme. Nevertheless, a suspicious police leader wants to interview whoever it was that said they saw what might have been a grave being prepared.

Car crash turns into heated verbal confrontation. Several squad cars head for Ponoi Place.

Smoke reportedly seen by Valley Isle Disposal, “North Market area near Pi‘ihana,” says 911 caller. Fire unit dispatched.

Horse reportedly fell on top of 41-year-old female. Broken pelvis of the woman, callers say. Medics to Kaupakalua Road.
4:31 p.m., Makawao
Male, 16 years old, broken collarbone. Will walk to MFD Engine 5 hale, callers tell 911.
Monday, March 24
8 a.m., Ulupalakua
Smoke reportedly seen way up in the hills. MFD units roll.
11:44 a.m., Wailuku
Female, 41, with fiberglass shaft piercing ankle area, was pulled out prior to arrival of fire crew. They administer first aid while awaiting medics. No explanation of how that accident happened.
12:34 p.m., Kahului
Man wanted for abuse turning himself in at Wailuku police station, says 911.
1:35 p.m., Kihei
Industrial area fire alarm at Kihei Commercial Plaza. Fire engines assigned go Ohukai Road. “No flames or smoke,” says first arriving unit. “Cancel others.”
1:40 p.m., Waiehu
Engine 1 announces that the wandering elderly male they and others have been looking for, for hours, has just been located by the Highway and Pilihana. Being returned home now.

Caller telling 911 he sees unknown guy, black shirt, black pants, trespassing on his private property. Then the line goes dead. Squad car hurries to address.

Report of brush fire in back of the Lahaina Aquatic Center. Westside fire units respond.

Caller says his good friend left the basketball court area because a Caucasian male, about 55, in black leather jacket, beside a motorcycle, kept looking at him in a weird way. “The guy who left is Afro-American,” says caller. Squad car.

Female caller complains that more than a dozen young men, drinking, were yelling rude remarks as she passed an area in Kamaole Park. Squad car goes.

Male and female in serious physical fight. Police go emergency.

2:40 p.m., Kuihelani Highway
Another speed demon weaving recklessly in and out of afternoon traffic. Area police are told to watch out for a red Toyota pickup truck, Kahului-bound.
3:51 p.m., Lahaina
Drug dealer said to be sending constant tempting text messages to teenagers, someone with them tells 911. Asking them repeatedly, “How much do you want?” He’s cruising Front Street in a Black Honda, the informant says. Squad cars alerted.
4:07 p.m., Off Mokulele Highway
Report of trespassers on pig farm across the way from animal shelter area. Hidden security guard keeps an eye on them while awaiting arrival of regular police.
6:29 p.m., Wailea
MFD Engine 14 hands responsibility for a boat disabled 300 yards offshore to the Coast Guard and returns to home base.
7:35 p.m., Upcountry
Woman says male followed her home. Went around knocking on windows when she shut the front door. Told her he had already been inside her house, earlier the same day. She, frightened, calls 911. Police go.
