“Several vehicles parked blocking traffic, and sign wavers are there, too,” says 911. No word on what grievances those rural sign wavers might be protesting during this Hana festival weekend.

“People are stealing things out of recycle bins,” say the callers. “They’re in a green Aerostar van.” Police to condos.

“Compound fracture, right leg below the knee,” say lifeguards. Windsurfer laid out on the grass now, awaiting medics, next to beach park picnic tables.

Another fractured leg report. A 20-year-old crashed skateboard. Medics.

A possible hanging. Male, near 29 years of age. Emergency units.
5:48 p.m., ‘Iao Valley
Rowdy drinkers said grouped and jeering at the top of their voices in the topmost parking lot. 911 tries to rouse DLNR agents to go bust ’em.
8:45 p.m., Pukalani
Screaming obscenities at 911 operators, a woman tells them they better get police to her place, because her husband is abusing her.

“Male and female physically duking it out,” say 911 callers. Police.

Longhorn steer, three of them, said sauntering idly on the highway by Lauie Drive, Hawaiian Homes. Area police asked to get into roundup mode.

Father calling 911, worried. The mother, from whom he is separated, was supposed to bring their shared two children back, several hours ago. General police advisory about the situation is broadcast.
Thursday, May 1
1:45 p.m., Makena
Air One helicopter spots that searched-for snorkeler between Big Beach and Little Beach, but, floating under the water between 40 and 100 yards off shore. The victim, reportedly about 54 years old, male, allegedly worked as a hospital radiologist in California. He was eventually recovered by jet ski lifeguards from under the ocean waters, but already drowned, so say eyewitnesses.
2:15 p.m., Little Beach Makena
Report of vicious fight between two males. One guy said punched hard upside his head. DLNR police climb out over the rocky goat trail with a handcuffed alleged male assailant dressed in camouflauge shorts, no shirt and a bush hat. The other alleged participant in that same scuffle, showed bleeding on upper left side his face, spent time with paramedics by their ambulance driven onto the beach sand.
9:13 p.m., Kahului
Strong smell of propane gas near Wendy’s drive-through at Maui Mall, say alarmed 911 callers. Police asked to go check on that. Other 911 callers soon report the same sickening odor near Safeway on Hobron Ave. Hazmat and other emergency units join in an intense nighttime search by the Hana Highway Gas Company building, and nearby, trying to locate that overwhelming gas smells source.
9:28 p.m., Mokulele
“Multiple car crash with injuries” is the 911 report. Near animal shelter area, again. Police units go emergency flashing blue lights and sirens.
9:32 pm., Kahului
One police officer suggests the gagging propane smell may be from a barge that just docked at the harbor, and may be purging out its tanks. Other cops immediately offer to go check on that.
9:38 p.m., Kahului
Word comes now that the source of the overwhelming propane smell was indeed The Gas Company site. “They’re filling up delivery trucks with propane until midnight. One such connection reportedly ruptured before,” says one police officer reporting to 911. “Downgrade” is soon ordered for all the other searchers involved.

“Dog bite case outside Tutus restaurant” says 911 radio. Police go.
10:24 a.m., Mokulele
“Motorbike crashed near Kihei junction. Rider is holding his arm.” MFC Engine 6 sent first responder.
10:34 a.m., Kula
“He crashed through some rotten wood while renovating the house. Deep laceration to one leg, ”says 911. Engine 13 assigned.
11:29 a.m., Kapalua
“Construction worker says feeling dizzy and seeing spots before his eyes. Tingling in hands and feet also.” Engine 11 sent first responder. “Medic 5 is assigned too” says 911 “but it’ll be awhile.”
9:52 p.m., Kahului
Neighbor asked group of about six males to turn their music down. They tell him “No.” He wants police.

10:12 a.m., Kahului Airport
Report of theft by baggage claim areas. Police officer asked to go document.
12:50 p.m., Ha‘iku
Man claims his wife just threatened him. Wants police to know, so tells 911. He’s on foot now walking back to their home.
