Sunday, May 4

11:00 a.m., Haleakala

Hang glider crashed half mile above Mile 7 Crater Road. Kula Engine 13 scrambles to rescue. Looking for 911 callers brown pickup truck by the road near crash site. Meanwhile, Air One helicopter warms up for possible airlift. When the fire ground crew gets to the crashed guy they report “his chief complaint is back pain.” Even so, “he will walk with us out to the road and the waiting ambulance.”

Monday, May 5

11:48 a.m., Waiehu

Caller reportedly found “a foreign object, covered with blood” hanging outside his fence. Police unit goes to document.

11: 50 a.m., Ha‘iku

Caller locked out of his own home by the wife. Asking for police help.

12:50 p.m.,

Irate evicted surfer back on the same condo property. “That’s called trespassing,” says 911. Police go.

12:53 p.m., Kahului

“Caller talking to 911 operators in a very aggressive manner,” says 911. “He’s across the street from Foodland,” says 911. Squad car.

Tuesday, May 6

11:23 a.m., Pa‘ia

Female caller says that a man wearing a mask over his face followed her down Baldwin Beach. “She believes,” says 911, “that she saw him masturbating.” That woman waiting now for a police car to arrive, outside Pa‘ia Youth Center.

3:55 p.m., Pukalani

“Child accidentally locked inside a black car. Keys locked inside, too,” says 911. Rescue unit dispatched.

4 p.m., Moloka‘i

Stubborn brush fire all afternoon. Multiple fire units join fight.

Wednesday, May 7

7:43 p.m., Sprecklesville

“Truck bogged down on the beach with the tide is coming in!” says alarmed 911 caller. Engine 2.

7:50 p.m., Upper Pa‘ia

“Electrical wires sparking across from Sacred Hearts” Engine 2 assigned.

7:51 p.m., Pa‘ia

Report of “assault” outside Mana Food store. Engine 2, arriving at this, their third assignment in less than 10 minutes says, “On scene now with police. But there’s no assault victim here.”

Thursday, May 8

12:33 p.m., Pukalani

Out of control 8-year-old at elementary school. “Calling the parents now,” says 911.

1:01 p.m., Kihei

Dog said darting dangerously in and out of traffic on Ka‘ono‘ulu. Police car goes to meet with the 911 caller.


1:41 p.m., Kapalua

A fire that burned an estimated 60 acres yesterday was extinguished at 9:35 this morning. Fire officials have determined that the fire was ignited by a car’s exhaust system while it was parked over tall grass. Fire personnel were on scene last night conducting mop up operations to the fire that was first reported at 3 p.m. Thursday. The fire in Kapalua was located approximately one-quarter mile above Pineapple Hill. No homes were threatened and no injuries were reported.

2:29 p.m., Kahului

“Suspicious activity going on by the Post Office,” says 911. No further explanation. Prowl car sent to monitor.

3:24 p.m., Hana

The Maui County 911 system is being greatly upgraded. Lots of technician talk being exchanged on the air for several days as that takes place.

3:37 p.m., Kahului

“Dairy and Haleakala intersection traffic signal completely out. No power,” says 911. Squad car.

Saturday, May 10

7:23 a.m., Kahului

“Report three bags stolen at Superferry near the beach,” says 911 Radio. Police asked to consult with security guards there.

7:31 a.m., Kahului

Cars crash. One lane blocked to traffic. Police there quickly.

8:41 a.m. Lahaina

“Male dizzy and weak outside Foodland,” says 911. Fire Ladder 3, the nearest available unit, responds from faraway Ukumehame.

8:50 a.m., Wailuku

Windshield shattered by ball batted out of the nearby baseball tournament. Squad car goes to Waiaka Lane, near Wailuku Community Center, to document.

9:15 a.m., Kahului

Fire hydrant broken. Neighbors yard flooded. Department of Water supply notified.

11:15 a.m., Honoapi‘ilani Highway

Black BMW, sometimes passing four cars at a time, driving dangerously near Olowalu, Lahaina-bound. Police alert broadcast.

1:17 p.m., Ha‘iku

Report pickup truck leaving well-known neighborhood grocery is being driven by man wanted in an assault. Area police told to look for him going Hana direction.

1:24 p.m., Unknown

“One adult male in custody,” reports male police officer. No word where.

2:30 p.m. Haleakala Highway

“Tourist couple in top-down Sebring speeding near Hali‘imaile.” Traffic advisory broadcast by 911.

7:35 p.m., Spreckelsville

“Brush fire on Stable Road,” announces 911. Battalion Commander 3, MFC Engine 2 and Rescue 10 are among first to respond to burning hau bushes.
