1 p.m., Kahului
Cane field brush fire, unknown origin, blazes two stories tall perilously close to the Kahului Heliport and its volatile fuel storage areas. HC&S tankers, MFC Rescue 10, Engine 2, join in the fight. Police roadblocks for some traffic.

Monday, May 12

1:42 p.m., Kihei
Male allegedly threatening to whack someone with steel pipe. Police go.

3:30 p.m., Kahului
Maui 911 says, “Oil spill at Alamaha and Dairy, the side toward Hana Highway.” Fire units go.

Tuesday, May 13

9:20 a.m., Kahului
Pakaula Street by front doors of store. “Female in black Jeep dizzy. Difficulty breathing, nauseous, getting really hot, rash breaking out.” Rescue 10 asked to respond. When they get there, the woman is inside a restroom.

9:36 a.m., Makawao
“Groundskeeper found a .32 caliber shell.” Police go.

9:57 a.m., Veterans cemetery
“Possible DWI driver,” says 911. Just banged into a parked car. Squad car dispatched.

10:09 a.m., Moloka‘i
Diabetic male, in shock. Fire unit as 1st responder (1239) goes Jasmine Drive.

11:30 a.m., Hali‘imaile
White 2008 Chevy, four-door, tinted windows, is a rental car, says observing police officer. He says that car is speeding recklessly down Haleakala. Suddenly, it screeches onto Firebreak Road, as police keep track.

12:11 p.m., Makena
“Dr. Leisure” at Big Beach tells 911 he found a wallet and backpack. Will wait for cops by his truck with the deer antlers mounted all over it.

3:30 p.m., Pukalani
“Golf cart stolen,” says Pro Shop at the golf course, per 911. Five juvenile males, all in T-shirts and baseball caps turned backwards, drove off with it, they say. Police go.

3:50 p.m., Kula
Caller says male, running, looking over his shoulder, looks “suspicious.” Suggest police come around. They do.

7 p.m., Kahului Airport
Male at American Airlines counter fell and struck his head per Homeland Security rep there, says 911. Bleeding. A police supervisor, on the radio, says he believes that HS is more than able to handle the situation.

8 p.m., Pa‘ia
Accident involving fallen live wire on Baldwin Avenue creates need to reopen the bypass road. 911 makes calls. MECO takes over.

Wednesday, May 14

12:25 p.m., Maui Mall
Woman “smoking something” (other than tobacco is implied) outside popular restaurant. So caller tells 911. Area police notified.

12:45 p.m., Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center
Apparently drunk male stumbles into a bench under watchful eyes of Mall Security. They, in turn, ask 911 for regular police to come there. Eventually turns out to be a medical matter.

3:59 p.m., Lahaina
Holdup alarm at bank. Male suspect in black tank top just left. Area police advised.

4:09 p.m., Unnamed site
Family fight. “Three males physical, one youngster getting involved,” says 911. Police dispatched to Hale Makana Park.

4:21 p.m., Pa‘ia Post Office
Report about unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle. Police go.

5 p.m., Makawao
“Cruelty to chickens,” says 911 caller. “One female, two male juveniles” said to be involved. Police asked to go back of popular restaurant.

6:13 p.m., Pa‘ia
Bartender wants police to shoo away male he says is a legally reported long-time harasser. But Central says it can find no record of a TRO in that situation.

6:15 p.m., Kihei
Behind supermarket in the drainage ditch, callers say, half a dozen “taggers” are at work spraypainting major graffiti. Squad car.

6:20 p.m., over Kahului Airport
“There’s a Hawaiian Airlines plane, about 250 aboard, inbound, one engine not working,” says 911 Central. Fire and rescue units go, emergency. “Maui Memorial and the chaplain notified.”

Commentary:
I would personally like to commend the folks at Maui TSA and TSA in Honolulu for exemplary kokua in helping me cover the Hawaiian Airlines story. It all turned out okay, when those same passengers flew out again on other Hawaiian Air flights.
