Pedestrian and bicycle safety, sidewalks and roundabouts…As the cost of fuel soars, more South Maui residents are considering walking and riding bicycles as alternatives to using a car and to cut down on fuel consumption. But is it safe to walk where there are no sidewalks? Do our children have safe routes when they walk or bike to school? Is it safe to bike beside cars and trucks on South Maui’s roadways? And how much gas is wasted idling at traffic lights and in stop-and-go traffic?
The Kihei Community Association’s monthly meeting at the Kihei Community Center on Lipoa will address these issues and related topics, such as proper drainage in South Maui, in reference to last December’s Kona storms.
“Hear about these issues and the status of the North-South Collector Road and the Pi‘ikea roundabout at the Tuesday, June 17. KCA meeting featuring Milton Arakawa from Public Works,” said KCA Boardmember Andrew Beerer.
All are welcome to arrive at 6 p.m. to talk story with neighbors before the presentation, which begins promptly at 6:30 p.m. Food donations for the Maui Food Bank are accepted, and free cloth grocery bags from the Maui County Recycling Section are available.
KCA Community meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month. Help make South Maui a better place for all.
