The Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra begins its 2008-09 season. The Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra (MYPO) will begin its fourth season with three classes beginning on Saturday, Sept. 6, and Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Baldwin High School (BHS) Band Room from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The MYPO will hold auditions on Saturday, Aug. 23, in the BHS Band Room from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Auditions for the orchestra are open to students ages 12-18, who play the trumpet, trombone, tuba, flute, clarinet, bassoon, percussion, violin, viola, cello and bass. It is a full symphonic orchestra for students, with music written by the great masters such as Beethoven, Bach, Tchaikovsky and Mozart, as well as music by contemporary composers. The music will be rehearsed and performed at the annual MYPO Winter and Spring Concerts. For those interested in joining but intimidated by auditions, please know that those listening are understanding and compassionate, as they too have had many “audition experiences.” Auditions are a great learning experience and an opportunity to grow not only musically, but also as an individual. One may never know their true abilities—unless they try. Audition information and music can be downloaded off of the MYPO Website at mauiyouthphilharmonic.org. For more information or registration forms, call 283-6723 or email mypomaui@gmail.com.
