Coed Softball League

Our Coed Softball League resumed on April 15 after taking Easter Sunday off. The first game of the night was between the 808 Grinders and Stella Blues, two teams with a combined win total of one. Stella Blues took advantage of seven hits and 10 walks and led 11-1 after three innings. The Grinders bats finally came to life in the fifth inning, as they scored eight runs, but it wasn't enough as Stella Blues held on for a 12-9 win, earning their first victory of the season.

Highlighted by Benito Alconcel's three run triple, and seven walks, league-leading Nuts & Honey's jumped out 11-0 after just one inning, then cruised to a 21-4 rout of Hobrahs, who managed only seven hits for the game.

Trailing 14-4 after five innings, Pool Polo fought back behind Fausto Allosado's two- run homerun, but fell short in a 15-11 loss to the Cove Park 'Ohana. Dale Fernandez and Clarissa Sau were top batters for the 'Ohana, going a combined five for six at the plate.

The league wrapped up its first regular season on April 22. In a back and forth game, Hobrah's took an 8-5 lead in the fourth inning, then surrendered eight runs, only to come back and score eight runs of their own over the last two innings, then held on for a 16-15 win over Cove Park 'Ohana.

Stella Blues got off to a hot start, taking an 11-0 lead on league leading Nuts & Honey's, but after a seven-run third inning, and a 12-run forth, Nuts & Honey's took control and went on to a 20-12 win.

The 808 Grinders jumped out to a 4-0 lead and the game stayed close until an 11-run seventh inning helped propel Pool Polo to an 18-4 win.

A single-elimination tournament was held on April 29 at the South Maui Community Park field. I'll have those results next week.

Girls Basketball League

We are still taking registration for our upcoming Girls Basketball League that will start this month. Girls age 9 to 15 are encouraged to sign up and play.

Coed Volleyball League

I'm still looking for anyone interested in helping organize a Coed Volleyball League for the sand courts at Kalama Park. If you are interested, please call me at 879-4533.

Kalama Park Update

In case you tennis players didn't know, the Kalama Park courts resurfacing project is pau and the courts are open for use. After the unfortunate damage, the backstop has been replaced so the baseball field is back in action.

Mahalo to the gang at Starbucks in Kukui Mall for giving the tables in the pavilions a fresh coat of paint.

Keiki Fest 2012

It was another fun day at Keiki Fest 2012 at UH Maui College on the April 14. The county Department of Parks & Recreation conducts a bicycle safety course at the event to help teach young children how to be safe while riding. This year, 55 participated in the program, and two of them (one girl and one boy) walked away with brand new bikes donated by generous sponsors. We'll conduct another bike safety class at the Kihei Youth Center's Child & Youth Day Celebration in October.

Have a great week everybody!

We're always looking for volunteer help with game timing, scorekeeping and officiating. If you have spare time and an interest in helping out with a great youth program, call either myself or Jake at 879-4533, send us a message on our South Maui Parks Facebook page, or just grab your shoes and a whistle and come to the park!
