The Wizard of Oz

Lions, and tigers and bears at the Historic ‘Iao Theater? Oh my!

November 15, 2012
The Maui Weekly

Beginning on Thanksgiving weekend, Maui OnStage will take Maui audiences on a trip over the rainbow at the Historic 'Iao Theater in Wailuku. Join the Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion, Dorothy and her little dog, too, on their magical adventure to Oz.

Music and lyrics for "The Wizard of Oz" are by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg, adapted by John Kane for the Royal Shakespeare Company and based on the 1939 MGM film.

This version, first presented in London in 1988, was adapted to follow the famous motion picture even more closely than any other previous adaptations.

“Beehive, bah! Let her try and make a beehive out of me!” says Ricky Jones, who plays the Tin Man.

The Maui OnStage production will feature state-of-the-art special effects never before seen at 'Iao Theater, and an all-local cast of adults and children.

The cast of 34 features Marissa Godinez as Dorothy, Chris Kepler as the Scarecrow, Ricky Jones as the Tin Man, Chino LaForge as the Cowardly Lion, Lisa Paulson as Glinda and Rochelle Dunning as the Wicked Witch of the West.

Don't miss the chance to share this family classic, live on-stage, this holiday season.

"The Wizard of Oz," directed by Alexis Dascoulias, will run Friday, Nov. 23, though Dec. 9, with performances Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m.

Reserved seating available is available from $15 to $28.

A special family-discount night will be offered on Dec. 2 at 6 p.m.

For tickets or more information about Maui's oldest theater company, call the 'Iao Theater Box Office at 242-6969 and visit mauionstage.com.
