Kihei Library to Offer Children and Teen Events

December 6, 2012
The Maui Weekly

Kihei Public Library will offer three free events for children and teens in December 2012.

"First Fridays Teen Literature Group" will be held on Friday, Dec. 7, at 3:30 p.m. in Children's Area. Teens ages 13 to 19 are invited to join this group, which will meet on the first Friday of the month to discuss and share their thoughts and opinions of a selected book.

"Stargirl" by Jerry Spinelli is this month's book. Alexander McCall Smith's "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" will be the January 2013 book and the group will meet on Jan. 4.

Participants will get to keep the books after they read them.

Registration is required; call the library to sign up. Light refreshments will be provided.

"Bubble Day!" will be held on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 10:30 a.m. in library's backyard. The whole family is invited to blow, pop, catch and chase bubbles of all sizes. All materials will be provided.

Participants should wear a swimsuit, and bring sunscreen and towel.

All young children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

"Discovering the Classics with Papa Lopaka" is set for Wednesday, Dec. 19, at 3 p.m. in Children's Area. Join Papa Lopaka (Robert DeVinck), who will present a dramatic reading of his "Classics Illustrated" comic book, "A Christmas Carol," by Charles Dickens. There will be a brief discussion, question-and-answer session, and Lopaka will encourage children to read the original book.

The program is recommended for ages 8 to 12 and will include light snacks.

Papa Lopaka is a writer, English literature scholar and long-time reader of classic books.

All events are sponsored by the Kay A. Edwards Memorial Fund.

Contact the library as soon as possible if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed for these programs.

Kihei Public Library is located at 35 Waimahaihai St.

For more information or to register, call the library at (808) 875-6833.
