On Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18, Ebb & Flow Arts (E&FA) will present a two-day mini international festival as part of its North South East West Festival 2013.
There is no charge for admission.
In Wailuku on Friday at 7:30 p.m., Jaap Blonk from the Netherlands will perform at 'Iao Congregational Church, 2371 W. Vineyard St. He has championed sound poetry all over the world for 30 years.
Poet Jaap Blonk
This unique and captivating art form began in the early 20th century. Sound poetry is an artistic form bridging literary and musical composition. It focuses on the phonetic aspects of speech instead of its semantic and syntactic values. By definition, sound poetry is intended primarily for performance.
Blonk combines the music of poetry, the humor of Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky," and the made-up sounds of jazz's "scat."
He will recite from memory "Ur Sonate" by Kurt Schwitters, one of the first, major sound poems, and include works by John Cage in his program.
Blonk will also recite his own original work, including "Dr. Voxoid."
He will offer an "informance" about his work on Friday morning at 10:30 a.m., at Kaunoa Senior Center in Sprecklesville. Blonk also will offer workshops to third grade students at Kihei Elementary School.
On Saturday at 7:30 p.m., Makawao Union Church will be the venue for "Works for Flute, Viola and Harp" by renowned composers from Russia, France and England. Igor Stravinsky, Alexander Scriabin, Gabriel Faure, Claude Debussy, Edgar Varese and Malcolm Arnold will be featured as performed by Honolulu-based musicians Susan McGinn, principal flutist of Hawai'i Symphony; Colin Belisle, violist, also a member of Hawai'i Symphony; harpist Tatyana Shapiro-Leiste, a recent Maui resident originally from Russia, where she studied at St. Petersburg Conservatory; and pianist Beatrice Scorby, a Maui resident and graduate of Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University.
A central work in this program is one of Claude Debussy's final works, "Sonate" for flute, viola, and harp, a groundbreaking contemporary "classic."
Makawao Union Church is located at 1445 Baldwin Ave. above Pa'ia.

These events are part of E&FA's annual, multi-day, multi-site, international North South East West Festival 2013. E&FA is a nonprofit presenter of modern music and multi media events. The only such presenter in Hawai'i, E&FA was founded in 1999 by composer/pianist Robert Pollock. It aims to build bridges between the arts and connect artistic expressions and cultures. E&FA creates a global soundboard and mirror for music and art in Hawai'i. The nonprofit also teaches Maui's children how to read and write music with "Scaling Haleakala," an award-winning curriculum.
