Hawaiian Electric warns of fake caller scam

August 22, 2013
Maui Weekly

Hawai'i's major utilities say an increasing number of their customers have been victims of telephone scams. Hawaiian Electric Co. and its subsidiaries say dozens of small businesses have reported getting calls alleging that their electricity bill is delinquent. The scams seem to target mostly ethnic restaurants. Customers say the caller ID shows that the calls are coming from a Hawaiian Electric company.

Customers are advised to call their utility's customer service department directly if a call seems suspicious.
