Maui Coffee Roasters expands to Pacific Northwest

September 19, 2013
Maui Weekly

Maui Coffee Roasters, which has supplied award-winning, fresh micro-roasted coffee to Hawai'i residents and visitors since 1982, recently announced the grand opening of its first retail location on the Mainland.

The brand new location, a drive-through in the metropolitan area of Spokane, Wash., is the first of ten retail stores slated to open throughout the Pacific Northwest within the next three years. The addition of the Spokane store comes on the heels of an agreement between Maui Coffee Roasters and its affiliated company, Maui Coffee Roasters USA, to expand its operations to the Western U.S., according to company Vice President Michael Okazaki.

"We look forward to sharing our roasting expertise and the true flavors of the islands with Mainland customers," Okazaki said. "And by doing so, we hope to enhance the image of Hawaiian coffees throughout the Western U.S."

The newest addition to the Maui Coffee Roasters family is located at 9611 East Trent Ave. in the heart of Spokane Valley.

Jay Higgins, head of Maui Coffee Roasters USA, said Spokane residents welcomed their newest coffee shop at a grand opening last month.

"The new location is designed as the prototype store for additional company-owned and franchise-operated units," said Higgins. "Coffee is a way of life in the Pacific Northwest, so it's an ideal place for us to be."

This is the second offshore venture for Maui Coffee Roasters. The company currently has a retail store in Tokyo, Japan. Coffee for the Tokyo store--and soon for the new Pacific Northwest locations--is roasted at Maui Coffee Roasters' headquarters in Kahului and shipped directly overseas.

Known for its careful attention to quality bean selection, freshness and small batch roasting, Maui Coffee Roasters has been one of Hawai'i's most respected boutique roasters for more than 30 years. A five-time winner of the "Best Kona Coffee Cup" award, the company offers a variety of 100 percent Kona, Kau and Maui coffees, as well as Hawaiian-blend and Hawaiian-flavored coffees.
